Enter: Orion’s Arc

The latest segment of the Devildom AU that my friend and I are roleplaying is one that features a new character, a man who is fond of macabre humour and unafraid of harnessing the dark arts - Orion.

He is loosely based off the looks of Lee Dong-wook, a South Korean actor we found too enticing not to add to our universe, haha.

The image that started it all, haha.

His parents were huge fans of astrology and mythology, hence his name. He is the oldest exchange student, and was rather hard for the Prophet-King to track down, as he was off backpacking in Europe. He enters halfway through the school year, but quickly proves himself as capable of holding his own, already possessing an extensive knowledge of magic and Devildom history.

Today we developed him quite a bit in our story. He befriends Dirk, a fellow human who teaches at RAD about human world customs. Dirk has a girlfriend, Amari, who is a the attractive demon law professor, but lately their relationship has run stale. Orion takes it upon himself to do research on Dirk’s behalf, and ends up having a lovely dinner time getting to know her through coffee/lunch dates, and casual strolls. He is careful to spend equally as much time with the other professors and faculty members, as not to arouse suspicion. As a result, he is close with Dirk, Claunecc, Magnolia, and Lucifer himself.

(Side note: Lucifer and Orion have a lot in common, including music taste, a liking for chess, fine spirits, and dining at Ristorante Six. They often go to the Devildom horse derby to bet on races, HAHAHA. Dirk even came with them one time, and drank a potion where he grew shorter temporarily to replace a jockey that was too sick to compete - and won.)

At first, it was all research on Dirk’s behalf. But when Amari opened up more and confided to Orion that she was distressed over a case she was representing - a case where the culprit would walk free despite being guilty, all because he had money - he took action. To take her mind off of this, Orion takes her to the Devildom Museum of Modern History and shows her around the exhibits, discussing topics like superstitions, witch hunts, and false accusations (the human world exhibit featured medieval torture devices). Amari opens up more about her family, specifically her mother.

Later that night, Orion ends up casting a death curse on the culprit, killing him slowly over a span of 3 weeks. Amari is overjoyed with the news, and wants to celebrate with lunch. Orion ups the ante and suggests they grab dinner at Ristorante Six, his treat. Amari says that they’ll either go halfsies or she must decline. He graciously accepts her generous counter-offer.

They head to dinner and the waiter is surprised to see Orion there with someone other than Lucifer. The two have a marvellous time over food and drink, and the waiter brings out a heart-shaped dessert while giving Orion a wink. Amari takes everything in stride, not one to ever turn down dessert. She asks if she can have the strawberries on the plate, commenting that strawberries are her favourite. Orion says he will take note of this, but Amari states it isn’t important information.

“If someone is important, everything about her is important information,” Orion says simply.

At the end of the dinner, Orion helps Amari with her coat. As he’s pulling it over her shoulders, he catches the waiter giving him a fist pump from behind the counter. Orion sighs, and they begin the journey home. He offers to escort her back to her apartment.

Amari gets cold easily, so on the walk home she finds herself shuffling closer to Orion, who notices and gives her his scarf. Eventually, he puts an arm around her and brings her close. In the moonlight, he gets a good glimpse of her and comments that she is beautiful. Amari responds that he isn’t bad himself, humming.

He drops her off home and she wraps his scarf back around him. He says he had a lovely time and that he’s looking forward to next time.

“You know where to find me,” she hums softly.

She lets her hands linger on the scarf for a second before heading inside. Orion reflects that he would gladly kill more criminals if he’d get to see her happy like this every time. Not even only criminals, but anyone else for that matter.

Since then, they’ve been talking more and more as friends. Amari loves sharing case studies with Orion and discussing them. Orion reports his findings back to Dirk as they have coffee and read the newspaper together. Dirk likes to do the crosswords, and Orion like reading the day’s articles.

As Amari grows closer to Orion with phone calls and excursions, Amari realizes that in fact, she might be falling for him. She decides maybe they should not meet for dinner anymore, and as Orion is a friend of Dirk’s, he agrees to this.

“If that is what you want.”

She can’t even say anything to that, as she loves their time together. It’s always wonderful talking to him, so she just hums instead. They’re about to leave, and she’s just holding onto his hands. She smiles and says, “Thanks for keeping me warm. I’ll miss our walks.”

He smiles back at her and says, “It is wise for one to cut out temptations in their lives that they are not willing to pursue. I respect that.” He reaches out his hand and rests it on her shoulder for a moment, before taking his leave.

“You know where to find me,” he says, echoing her quote back to her from their first night out.

Time passes, and Diavolo sees Orion’s potential and promotes him to assistant professor to the school’s curses and hexes prof. There is a celebration for Orion joining the faculty and Dirk is so happy for his friend. He invites Orion over for drinks at the same time Orion invites Dirk over for drinks (my friend and I literally typed this out at the same time, haha.) They laugh and embrace.

Dirk gets wine drunk at a karaoke bar, sighing about his girlfriend and alluding his attraction to Lord Diavolo. After they sing a couple more songs, Orion takes Dirk home, tucking him in after pulling off his shoes and placing a glass of water on the nightstand. He plugs in Dirk’s phone for him and leaves.

Eventually, Dirk realizes that him and Amari will not work out. He breaks things off with Amari: “I love you, but I don’t think I love you in a way that I can be your partner.” She is shocked, as she truly cares about Dirk and he was her first boyfriend in a while, having been busy with law school.

She keeps the breakup from Zagreus but feels comfortable enough to tell Orion, who comforts her in a platonic way. He gets her outside and brings her to feed the Devildom ducks in the ponds outside RAD. They feed the ducks grapes, bird seed, and meat shavings. The Devildom ducks love meat, and have teeth along with beaks, and three eyes. Amari pulls her feet up onto the bench as the ducks waddle out of the water and surround them. The two walk the school grounds and get followed by ducks for a while.

They stop by a bakery and Orion picks up some strawberry flavoured pastries to cheer her up.  His companionship takes the edge off her breakup, and for that she is grateful.

Meanwhile, Orion also spends time with Dirk, taking him out to do things so that he can discover what he wants to do in life and what makes him happy. Orion asks Dirk to teach him how to lasso, and they spend time practicing outside looping a tree stump. They also visit the stables outside of town, riding demon horses and going fishing and camping.

Amari eventually informs Zagreus of the breakup before deciding to spend time staying at her parent’s. Orion does place a hex on Zagreus on Dirk’s behalf, causing him to be unable to speak about Amari; any attempts to mention her is replaced with the topic of pine nuts.

... And that is where we are at now. I HAVE TO SAY, I am loving dark sorcerer Orion. No one knows his age, and he is happy to keep it that way, although he does appear to be in his mid 20s to early 30s in appearance. He has been a fun character to play, even if he does have dark tendencies, and has formed pacts with 2 demons while in the human world. More on his character to come in the following days, haha.
