Avoidance

Sometimes to get to God, first you gotta meet the devil.

Devildom OC writing drabble, dumping it here.

Matilda lazily flipped through her curses & hexes textbook, a heavy sigh escaping her lips. Professor Magnolia had let the class off early, but Matilda found herself wandering the halls of RAD long after her classmates had gone home. She eventually found herself a cozy spot in the library, and so there she was, trying to study but finding it hard to concentrate.

Ever since she arrived as one of the human exchange students in the Devildom, her life was flipped upside down. Sure, she always had somewhat of a grasp on her magical abilities back in the human world, but here things were different; her powers were magnified, as if there were a hidden reservoir of energy she could draw it from at will. Even the dagger she carried everywhere, a family relic passed down for generations, seemed to pulsate with a strange magic that was never there before.

She checked her D.D.D., noting the time. Satan still hadn’t messaged her, which likely meant that Lucifer likely hadn’t adjourned the student council meeting yet. Sending a text couldn’t hurt, she thought.

' Hey, I’m in the library. Let me know when Lucifer finally releases you all. '

Minutes passed before Satan replied with a devil emoji blowing a kiss. At the sight of it, a smile graced Matilda’s lips. The blond, mischievous, book-loving demon was her anchor in this strange new environment. She wasn’t sure how Satan ended up being assigned as her guardian demon, but she was grateful for the arrangement nonetheless. It was likely due to the fact that Mammon was assigned to look after Kathryn, and Levi was far to absorbed in his hobbies to even be considered capable of looking after a human exchange student. And so, the task fell to Satan.

Everyone who saw them knew that Satan was her mentor at first glance, from their undeniable chemistry. They shared a mutual thirst for knowledge and intelligent conversation, which made getting along with him easy. He was always kind to her. They were friends, and yet so much more than that at the same time.

Out the corner of her eye, she saw a flutter of flowing white fabric. The dark-haired angel, Simeon, spotted her and made his way over to say hello. At the sight of his warm expression and form-fitting outfit, Matilda froze in place. His eyes were always gentle. They looked at her with a softness she had never encountered before.

“Matilda!” Even his voice, calling out to her, was like melodious harp music.

“Simeon, what bring you here?” she asked, careful to prevent her eyes from wandering lower than his face, which was something easier said than done. “Classes have ended for the day. Why haven’t you gone home to enjoy your weekend?”

He laughed, a musical sound that was pleasant to her ears. "I could ask the same of you! What's got you working so hard?"

"I'm waiting for Satan. We're supposed to walk home together."

"Ahh, yes. The Devildom can be a dangerous place for a lone human. Well, why don't I accompany you home?" Simeon beamed at her.

"N-no thanks, I was told by the higher RP goddesses that getting closer to you is forbidden, although you are undeniably charming," Mattie stammered, hastily shoving her belongings into her bag. "I'd better go! Talk to you never, Simeon!"

Off she sprinted, leaving Simeon scratching his head in mild confusion.

Humans. What strange creatures.

Kathryn's First Birthday

When Kathryn woke up that morning, she threw open the curtains and was surprised to see snow. She shouldn’t have been; after all, it was well into December, and Christmas was only a few days away, but it was a refreshing change to see snowfall in the Devildom. Her first winter away from home had her anticipating the year end celebrations more than usual.

She stood at the window and admired the snowflakes dancing, fluttering in the wind, falling broad and wide and fast, covering the ground in a pure white blanket. In the distance she could see the treetops dusted with white as well, as were the rooftops of the faraway school buildings of RAD.

There came a knock on the door.

“Come in!” Kathryn called.

Nathaniel stepped into the room with a smile on his face and a blueberry muffin on a plate in hand.

“Happy Birthday, Katty!” he exclaimed, going to her side and planting a kiss on her forehead. “I’m sorry we have school on your special day, but we can go out afterwards to celebrate if that’s all right with you.”

Kathryn laughed. “Thank you, Nate! But I’m fine with it. I don’t really celebrate my birthday. And besides, I’m working later anyway.”

The boy frowned. “You know I don’t approve of you working on your birthday.”

“I know, I know. Trust me, it’s not a big deal! Thanks for the muffin.” Kathryn tippy-toed and gave him a peck on the lips. “When I’m off work tonight, I’d like for you and Mattie to come to my room. There’s this thing I do every year, and this year I would like you two to be a part of it.”

“You got it. Anything you need, you need only ask,” he replied.

The pair made their way downstairs and immediately the smell of bacon grease and maple syrup greeted their noses. Matilda was standing in the kitchen, clad in a frilly apron, cooking up a storm. A blond head of hair could be seen poking out from behind the coffee machine, as Satan worked on brewing the morning coffee. He straightened up when he heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Good morning!” Matilda greeted cheerfully. She rushed over to Kathryn and wrapped the redhead in a big hug. “Happy birthday, my sweetest cousin!” heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Happy birthday,” Satan repeated, also greeting Kathryn with a warm smile. “May all your wishes come true.” heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Breakfast is almost ready. I figured we’ll all eat together before heading to class. I made fried eggs, sausage and bacon, potatoes, and a big stack of pancakes for Beel.” heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Did someone call for me?” As if on cue, Beelzebub came up behind Kathryn and picked the girl up in his strong arms, giving her a twirl. “Happy birthday, Katty!” he shouted, and she expected him to stop twirling her around after the first couple of times, but he didn’t stop. heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Oh Beel! Put me down, put me down!” she laughed, “I’m getting dizzy.” heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Sit down, sit down! Would you like some juice while you wait?” Matilda asked. heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

“Don’t forget your blueberry muffin,” Nathaniel reminded, still holding the little porcelain plate. heard Nathaniel and Kathryn approaching.

Kathryn took in the sight of her friends gathered all around her and a warm, fuzzy feeling bubbled up in her chest. She had a feeling this holiday season was going to be the best she’s ever had, and Kathryn’s intuition was rarely ever wrong.
