Adult Life

Life has been good these days, busy but good. Things are coming together in the good name of the Lord.

I have a comfy nest that I can decorate as I see fit. I just need to figure out what to make for dinner, as always. Also, cleaning is like a shadow that follows me everywhere! That shadow is never dispersed!

We currently have a fun little group of animals living with us. And that's been fun.

Gotta keep on my strict budget for the wedding. Sigh~

The First Practice Date

Mikazuki chose a cozy cafe for their first "practice date". Lena stood outside, wearing a soft sweater paired with a floral dress. She didn't have many fancy clothes, as most of her days were spent in a school uniform and she didn't have much money for shopping. She hoped that Mikazuki wouldn't mind, and that she still looked acceptable.

Taking a deep breath, Lena tried to calm her nerves. She glanced at the clock on her phone, which read 5:45pm. She was fifteen minutes early.

The sound of footsteps approaching made her look up. Mikazuki arrived, wearing a Japanese-style jacket and a turtleneck sweater underneath. His hair was not styled up, so his bangs were falling naturally over his forehead. Lena thought the change in hairstyle made him look almost like a different person. He looked... younger, and more approachable.

"You're already here," Mikazuki said, mildly surprised. "Am I late?"

"NO, no!" Lena shook her head. She shyly continued, "I... I didn't want to keep you waiting."

"Good. Being punctual is a sign of respect. And you've passed with flying colours."

Lena smiled nervously, fidgeting with the strap of her bag. "So… what's the plan?"

"We're going to have a normal date," Mikazuki replied. "The goal is for you to feel comfortable, learn how to hold a conversation, and maybe even have some fun."

Lena nodded eagerly. "Okay Sensei. Oops! I mean, Mikazuki-san."

“Just call me Mikazuki. Or, if it helps, pretend I’m someone you're genuinely interested in.” He opened the door for her. "Shall we head inside?"

As they browsed through the menu items, Mikazuki guided her. "When you're on a date, small talk can feel awkward, so start with simple questions. Like... What do you normally like to drink?"

Lena tapped her chin with a finger. "I usually get something sweet, like a caramel latte or a strawberry latte. Oh, but sometimes I just get hot chocolate, especially in winter. What about you?"

"I tend to go for something light, like tea. Keeps me focused."

Mikazuki ordered a herbal tea and Lena chose a strawberry latte. They sat down at a table by the window. Lena fiddled with a sugar packet, unsure of how to start the conversation. She looked small and somewhat vulnerable. Mikazuki noticed how nervous she was and tried to reassure her.

"Relax. This is just practice. Treat me like any other date."

"I haven't been on very many dates," Lena said, looking downwards. "I'm not even sure where to start."

Mikazuki placed his hands on the table and said, "Ask me a question. Something you would want to know about someone you're interested in."

"Okay..." Lena thought for a moment. "Ummm, what do you like to do for fun?"

"I correct funny essays for fun," he answered with a grin. "Like the one you wrote."

"Hey, that's mean!" Lena pouted at him. "I meant, outside of work. You know, in your spare time! Don't you have any hobbies?"

"Hmmm." Mikazuki paused to think, then said, "I suppose I like reading and studying literature, especially poetry from the Heian period."

"Huh? More reading...?" That answer was too typical for a history teacher. Lena felt like she wasn't getting far in the conversation. She tried not to let her disappointment show as she stirred her strawberry latte. "I mean, poetry, huh? That’s... um. Nice..."

Mikazuki chuckled, noticing her reaction. "I know that's not the most exciting answer. But it's something I always found peaceful. What about you? Any hobbies you enjoy?"

"Well, I like shopping, but only window shopping most of the time. Oh, and I enjoy hanging out with Aki-nee. We have sleepovers sometimes, and we just talk about everything."

"That sounds nice. Simple things are often the most meaningful, don't you think?"

Lena nodded. "I guess so. But it doesn’t feel very... interesting. Like, who would want to date someone who only likes shopping and sleepovers?"

"The right person will enjoy doing activities together, because they enjoy spending time with you," Mikazuki reminded gently. "It's not about what you do, but about who you're with."

His comforting words made Lena feel a little more at ease. "Okay. I have another question. Why did you decide to become a teacher?"

"I became a teacher because I wanted to help others see the beauty in the past. There's a lot we can learn from history, and I enjoy sharing those lessons."

"That's... Actually pretty cool. I guess I never thought of history that way. I always saw it as just memorizing facts for tests."

Mikazuki laughed. "Most people do. But it's more than that. History is connections, and stories about where we come from."

"Is that why you like wearing traditional clothing so much?" Lena asked. "I mean, you look really good in modern clothing too, but you seem to prefer the traditional style."

"Hahaha... I grew up with a strong sense of tradition in my family. I guess I feel comfortable, like I can be myself." He leaned back in his chair. "What about your family? Your grandmother seems traditional."

"Granny is traditional, but my parents are the exact opposite," Lena replied. "I don't really have a strong sense of tradition like you do. I'm still trying to figure out who I am."

"You have plenty of time for that," Mikazuki reassured her.

"Okay. I’ll keep that in mind. But you have to promise to be honest with me during these practice dates. If I’m doing something wrong or being... awkward, you'll tell me, right?"

"I promise."

As they finished their drinks, Mikazuki glanced at the time and hesitated for a moment. "Shall we call it a night? Or would you like to take a walk before heading home?"

"A walk sounds nice. It's still pretty early."

Mikazuki stood and, after a moment's hesitation, extended his hand toward her. "Ready to go?"

Lena blinked in confusion, as she looked from his hand to his face, then back to his hand again. She reached out slowly, her smaller hand fitting perfectly in his. He guided her to her feet, and Lena felt an unexpected flutter in her chest. She quickly pulled her hand back in embarrassment, unsure of how to feel about holding hands with her teacher.

Outside, the cool evening air greeted them as they strolled down the street. The glow of streetlights illuminated their path, and Lena found herself glancing up at Mikazuki's profile. This was all just practice, she reminded herself, but it felt more real than anything she'd experienced in a long time.

---

The two walked side by side in the direction of a nearby park. The evening air was chilly and Lena shivered, hugging her arms together when a breeze blew by.

"Are you cold?" Mikazuki asked.

Lena nodded, though she tried to be brave about it. "A little bit."

Mikazuki slid off his jacket and draped it over Lena's shoulders. Lena froze for a moment, looking up at him with wide eyes.

"You should have brought a coat," Mikazuki said gently.

"Yeah... thanks..." Lena pulled the warm fabric tightly around her body. She smelled his scent on the jacket, and couldn't stop herself from blushing again.

They continued their walk in silence before Lena spoke up again. "Do you think... I'll find someone who likes me for who I am? I feel like... Maybe I'm not enough."

Mikazuki stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Lena, you've always been enough. You don't need to change who you are to be loved. The right person will see all the little things that make you special and treasure them."

"How can you be sure?"

"Because, I see them," Mikazuki said simply.

Lena looked at her feet, her heart beating fast. 'This is just practice,' she reminded herself, 'stop letting yourself feel so shaken! He's just trying to be nice...'

Mikazuki smiled faintly and gestured for them to keep walking. Lena adjusted his jacket around her shoulders and continued to follow him, keeping her pace to stay by his side.

---

When Lena got home, the porch light was on. She slipped off her shoes in the entryway and called out, "I'm home!"

Granny poked her head out from the kitchen after wiping her hands on a dish towel. "Lena-chan, you're home late. Did your tutor session run long?"

"Uh, yeah! Something like that," Lena said, keeping away any details. The practice date wasn't the usual tutor session after all. "Sorry if I worried you."

Her grandmother raised an eyebrow but didn't ask any further questions. "There's dinner left in the fridge if you're hungry."

"Thanks Granny!" Lena said, making her way upstairs to her room.

She slid off Mikazuki's jacket and folded it neatly to place on her desk. She completely forgot to return it! The faint scent of his cologne lingered, and she could smell it on herself now as well. She flopped onto her bed, staring up at the ceiling. Her mind replayed the events of the evening... how Mikazuki's eyes looked when he smiled, and how warm his voice sounded when he reassured her with his kind words.

She reached for her phone and saw a text message from Aki.

[ Aki: ] How was tutoring? Did you survive History Sensei?

Lena smiled and typed back.

[ Lena: ] I'll tell you about it in person!

[ Aki: ] Tomorrow? Sleepover at my place?

[ Lena: ] Maybe! I'll let you know

Setting her phone aside, Lena curled up under her blanket. Despite her nervousness during the "date", she felt like maybe she had taken a small step forward. Maybe... Just maybe, she could figure out this whole "dating" and "love" thing, one step at a time.

Her last thought before drifting off to sleep was of Mikazuki's gentle smile and the way he said, "You've always been enough."

Lena's Holiday Job

Lena took a deep breath and stepped into the flower shop, the scent of fresh flowers filling her nose. Festive wreaths and poinsettias were displayed neatly in the window. She wasn't sure why she choose to apply here of all places, but the shop was a familiar place, and she wanted some extra money for the holidays.

Fukushima Mitsutada, one of Shoku's older brothers, stood behind the counter, arranging a bundle of holly branches. "Lena-chan!" he greeted her excitedly, "What a surprise to see you."

"Fukushima-san," Lena greeted him in return, "I... heard you were hiring, and I wanted to express my interest."

"Oh, there's no need to be so formal! What happened to calling me Fuku-chan?"

Lena shook her head in disbelief. She couldn't believe that a grown man of Fukushima's age could act so jovial and childish. "Are you still hiring or not?"

"Of course, of course. You're welcome to work here if you want. But you know, I was really looking forward to having you as a sister-in-law."

"What!" Lena could hardly believe her ears, "Seriously, Fukushima? Can you not?"

He chuckled, "Alright, I'll behave. But you have to admit, it's pretty funny."

"It's not funny! Let's keep things professional!"

While Lena was pouting, Fukushima tossed her a blue shop apron to put on. "Fine, professional it is. But you should know, the holiday season is pretty crazy around here. Hope you're ready for it."

Lena put on the apron and nodded. "I can handle it... just, can you promise not to tell anyone I'm working here?"

"Keeping secrets, are we?" He smirked. Lena said "anyone" but Fukushima could tell she really meant *one particular person*. "Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. BUT I'm not holding back on the occasional joke."

Lena rolled her eyes, already somewhat regretting her choice to work here. Well, at least getting the job was easy.

~~~
Over the next few days, Lena helped around Fukushima's flower shop: cleaning buckets, watering plants, and trimming flower stems. Fukushima was in charge of arranging the large bouquets, but slowly Lena began to learn from him, and was able to put together smaller ones for customers.
The shop was extremely busy during the holiday season, as Fukushima had forewarned. Customers that came in requested different things from elaborate wreaths, to simple bouquets for loved ones. Lena found herself constantly on her feet, taking orders and even delivering some of the flowers to nearby addresses.
One especially busy afternoon, Lena was in the middle of arranging a bundle of red roses when the shop bell chimed. She didn't look up, focusing on completing the arrangement before the next order came in.
"Excuse me?" a familiar voice said.
Lena glanced up slowly and froze when she saw who was standing in front of her. Dressed casually but unmistakably, was Shokudaikiri. He looked surprised to see her.
For a moment, they stared at each other in silence. Lena's hands tightened around the ribbon she was tying.
"I didn't know you worked here," Shoku finally said.
"I just started," Lena replied, trying to act calm and cool as she continued to tie the ribbon. "What are you doing here?"
"Picking up an order for my mother," Shoku said. He observed the arrangement she was working on. "That looks good."
"Thanks," Lena mumbled.
Fukushima appeared from the back room. "Ah, little brother! What brings you here?"
"Mum's order."
Fukushima learned against the counter, grinning. "Didn't I tell you, Lena-chan's working here now? Small world, huh?"
"No, you didn't say anything," Shoku responded flatly.
Fukushima chuckled and went to locate the order for the pickup. He handed the bouquet to Shokudaikiri. "Here you go. Tell mother I said hi."
Shoku accepted the flowers, his fingers brushing against the colourful paper wrapping. Then he glanced at Lena again. "Good luck with the job," he said quietly before turning to leave.
As the door closed behind him, Lena sighed deeply, her shoulders slumping. Fukushima was chuckling beside her, clearly amused by the scene.
"See, that wasn't so bad, was it?" he teased.
Lena grumbled, "For you, maybe!"
~~~

The bell above the shop door jingled, and Lena looked up from the counter. She was expecting another hurried holiday shopper, but the sight of Mikazuki caught her by surprise.

"Lena! I didn’t know you worked here."

Lena adjusted the apron tied around her waist, hoping that she looked presentable. "Hey, Mikazuki. Just a holiday job. What brings you in?"

"I need a bouquet. Something simple, but thoughtful."

 "For someone special?" Lena asked, keeping her voice as neutral as possible.

Mikazuki didn’t answer immediately. He thought deeply about her question, then answered, "I suppose you could say that."

"Sure. Let me see what I can put together."

As Lena turned to the flower racks, she couldn’t stop herself from wondering: A bouquet? Someone special? For who?

Her mind wandered, imagining Mikazuki presenting the flowers to some mysterious woman, maybe a colleague, or someone he met at an event? Was he going on a date, a real one?

For some reason, thinking about these thoughts made her heart ache. It’s none of your business, Lena, she told herself.

She focused on working, selecting a few white carnations, baby’s breath, and sprigs of evergreen to add winter charm. To tie everything together, she added a pale blue ribbon.

"Here you go," Lena said, handing the finished bouquet to Mikazuki. "Simple but thoughtful, like you asked."

Mikazuki took the bouquet, his fingers brushing hers. "It’s perfect. Thank you."

Lena's chest felt tight, but she forced herself to nod. "I hope they like it."

"I’m sure they will," he said with a smile.

As he paid and left the shop, Lena watched him through the frosted window. Why did she care so much? She told herself she was being ridiculous.

But the image of Mikazuki's smile lingered in her mind, and she couldn’t stop wondering who would be receiving those flowers from him.

Heroes - Buttered

We could be heroes 'til late
Staring down anything
We can do anything, 'til the rise
Give you a reason to stay
I'll tell you everything
We could see everything
Come alive

I got this feeling last night by the phone
I don't know what I was chasing alone
Butterflies in my ears telling me I should go

Tell me baby what you longing for
I wonder if I'd be the one you adore
Feels like I met you was there somewhere I'd seen you before?

We could be heroes 'til late
Staring down anything
We can do anything, 'til the rise
Give you a reason to stay
I'll tell you everything
We could see everything
Come alive

I can't leave in the morning this moment
I stay for you, it's what I choose
All I ever wanted took twice as long as calling
Don’t waste it when you already know

We could be heroes 'til late
Staring down anything
We can do anything, 'til the rise
Give you a reason to stay
I'll tell you everything
We could see everything
Come alive

I got you for the whole night
Waited 'til the time's right
Starin' up at the bright side
'Til it all becomes sunlight

Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom

I have started a new Otome game, and this time it's a classic - Enter Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom! When I saw the limited edition preorder pop up a while ago, I bought the game on a whim.

Sure, dating ninjas in Nightshade was fun, but now the time for dating samurai and a subsequent Japanese history lesson is in order.

The love interest cast is massive! So many options to choose from. My fiancé certainly knows quite a few of the familiar names from the Shinsengumi. I wasn't sure who to pick, but as with other game of this nature, I do an organic playthrough with the choices I want first before focusing on the routes of the other love interests.

In my first ~natural~ playthrough, I managed to get ensnared by... Hachiro Iba!

To be honest I wasn't sure who I was falling for - but MC's first encounter with Iba-san at the sweets shop and her description of him made him stand out among the rest. He has a very... Simeon-like quality, and a the same sweet smile and soft-spoken voice.

AND WOW I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! I ended up getting a demon-armed boyfriend... Ibaraki-Doji style?

Hahaha, well, I'll update as things progress.

Aki's wedding was a joyous occasion. Her parents, little brother Katsu, and other family members attended the event and everyone in the Honmaru celebrated her union with Hizen happily.

Lena was thrilled to witness her Saniwa sister Aki marry the love of her life. Aki had always been Lena's closest companion, and the thought of Aki marrying Hizen filled Lena with immense joy. Lena knew she wanted to do something special for her sister, something that would be as sweet and beautiful as Aki herself.

So, she decided to bake Aki's wedding cake. Lena baked an extravagant three tiered wedding cake, with the help of Shokudaikiri, Shishio and Chatannakiri. When Aki saw the cake, tears welled up in her eyes. She knew how much effort Lena had put into making it, and she was overwhelmed with gratitude.

The wedding was beautiful, filled with love and memories that would last a lifetime. When it came time to cut the cake, Aki and her husband Hizen did so with beaming smiles, surrounded by their loved ones.

"It's your favourite flavour!" Lena announced proudly, hoping that Aki would enjoy the cake. "Congratulations, sister. And Hizen-kun, of course!"

As Lena watched her sister, she felt a deep sense of fulfillment. She knew that this cake, made with love and the help of dear friends, would always be a sweet reminder of Aki's special day. Soon, with the arrival of the baby, more special days were to come.

Truth be told, the wedding was a welcome distraction for Lena. Lena had been dreading the thought of her cousin Nori's upcoming trial for weeks. Nori had always been the black sheep of the family, getting into trouble more often than not, but this time was different. The charges against him were serious, and the thought of him facing such a grim future weighed heavily on Lena's heart.

Despite their differences, Nori was still family, and the idea of him being locked away filled her with anxiety and sorrow.

On the day of the wedding, as Lena stood by Aki's side, her mind was filled with the celebration at hand. The sight of Aki walking down the aisle in her wedding attire, and the beaming smiles of the newlyweds were enough to keep Lena's mind focused on the present. The wedding was beautiful, and for a while, it was easy to forget about the heavy burden she had been carrying.

The wedding reception party lasted late into the night. But as the evening drew to a close, and the guests began to leave, Lena felt the weight of reality start to creep back in. The joy of the wedding was still fresh, but in the quiet moments, thoughts of Nori began to resurface. The trial was only days away now, and Lena knew she couldn't ignore it any longer.

Surf's Up

The weather was growing warm again, indicating summer's rearrival to the Honmaru. The days became longer with the sun setting late in the evening, and the sky was the clearest blue, soft and clear, with dashes of white clouds.

Summer was Lena's favourite season. Her spirits lifted immensely after Mikazuki's return. Slowly, day by day, Mikazuki's body healed, and soon his wounds disappeared completely, leaving not even a mark on his pale skin.

"Wow, Touken Danshi are really something special," Lena remarked, as she observed his forearm, turning it from front to back. There was not even a scar to be seen. "The healing powers from the repair have made you brand new."

"Yes, which is why you needn't have worried," Mikazuki replied, "As you can see, I am now fine."

"It's my job to worry about you," Lena exclaimed. She rolled her eyes at him. "Never leave without telling me again. Remember, that's an order from your master!"

"Hahaha... certainly, I will." Mikazuki gazed fondly at Lena, who still wore a pout on her face. He noticed her twisting the end of her braid around her finger, something she did when nervous.

Lately, there was a distant look in Lena's grey eyes. Mikazuki secretly wondered what was on her mind. There was a lot to do for Aki and Hizen's wedding ahead. Perhaps Lena was only nervous about the planning, but Mikazuki did not know for sure.

Sunday, July 14, 2024

Lena sat in the Honmaru office room, the room where all the filing cabinets were kept containing all the paperwork filled out for the Government of Time. However, Lena was not writing a report for the government today. No. Today Lena was flipping through a pile of wedding magazines.

A couple months had passed since they learned of Aki's pregnancy. Lena wanted to help her sister as well as she could, to research what might be needed for a marriage... Even if the marriage was to Touken Danshi!

"Hmmm... would Aki-nee want a big wedding? Or a small one? I'll have to ask!" Lena murmured happily to herself, turning the page of the magazine. "I hope she says big."

The pages were filled with photos of models in wedding dresses. Some of them looked like a ballgown out of a fairytale book. Some of them were simple, plain white dresses that reminded Lena of an apron.

"My sister deserves the best... she should wear a dress that compliments her beauty," Lena mused to herself. Suddenly, as she reached the last pages of the magazine, she let out a small gasp.

There, in the pages, was a spread of a beautiful bride and groom. They were being showered by sakura petals as they walked down an aisle. The bride was wearing a traditional Japanese kimono, a Shiromuku. The clothing was pure white like an dove's wings, and Lena thought Aki would look like an angel wearing this outfit. Next to the woman, the model for the groom donned a Montsuki Haori(Kimono jacket) and Hakama pants. Traditional for a samurai... and certainly a suitable groom's outfit for Hizen.

"Ahhh! This is the one!!! The tailor MUST MAKE THESE EXACT KIMONO!!!" A strong feeling of excitement shot through Lena. She quickly picked up the magazine to rush out the room to find Aki and ask her opinion about the clothing.

When Lena slid open the door, she came face to face with Mikazuki. "!!! What are you doing here?" Lena asked breathlessly. "Did you need me for something?"

Mikazuki smiled and stepped into the room. "I was merely looking for you... I hadn't time to thank you for earlier, when you cared for my injuries."

Lena's heart began pounding at his words. They brought up the memory of when Mikazuki became injured on the last mission. Somehow, Lena started the habit of always being the one who helped wash and bandage his wounds whenever he was injured.... She would no longer let others do this task.

"Mikazuki, you don't have to thank me... it's my job as your Saniwa to care for you," Lena said earnestly. "...And... I also hate seeing you get hurt, so of course I should be by your side... After all, you and I... We're more than Saniwa and Touken Danshi... Right?"

"Of course." Mikazuki reached out to tuck some of Lena's hair behind her ear. "Now, where were you off to? You seemed to be leaving in a hurry."

"Oh! It's because I saw the perfect wedding clothes for Aki and Hizen on their special day." Lena grinned widely and held up the magazine for Mikazuki to see.

"Ahahaha... those clothes look splendid. I'm sure Master Aki will respond favourably to your dressing suggestion."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence." Lena tilted her head and smiled at him, and a warm blush spread over her cheeks. "...Um... What about the groom's outfit? If you were getting married, would you imagine yourself in such an outfit? ...I mean - Would you... Would you want to ever marry someone?" she asked nervously.

Mikazuki paused at the question. He was silent as they walked down the Honmaru hallway, into the direction of Aki's room. In all his long years as a sword, he had seen much and experienced many battles. He had witnessed the lords that owned him marry women they fell on love with. But, never had he thought that he himself would ever fall in love and marry someone! Much less a human...

Lena stared curiously up at him, wondering why he was silent for so long. Normally, Mikazuki always knew what to say.

When they arrived in front of Aki's door, she turned to Mikazuki again."I have to meet with Aki-nee now." Lena reached up on her tippy-toes to kiss his cheek. "Will I see you after?"

"Mmh. Certainly." Mikazuki gave a nod and turned to leave, burning hot on his face from where Lena's lips had kissed him.

Later that evening, Hizen was surprised at a request from Mikazuki to spar together in the training hall. Mikazuki rarely sparred in the evening hours, preferring to spend that time relaxing with a cup of tea or soaking in a hot bath. Something was definitely up.

"Seems like something is on your mind," Hizen commented, as his sword clashed together against Mikazuki's. With a flick of his wrist, Hizen drove Mikazuki's sword into the floor. "You're unfocused."

"Hahaha... You are sharp as ever, Hizen." Mikazuki yielded, sliding his sword back into its sheath. "I guess I was distracted - with thoughts of someone."

"Tch... I hate to admit, but I feel the same." Hizen shook off his blade and also returned it to its sheath. "It feels weird... to have someone worth killing for... No." He shook his head, challenging the thoughts that he was only destined to be a killer sword. "To have someone worth living for." He corrected himself, knowing he needed to try and become the best husband and father he was capable of.

"We will continue to protect our masters, and their future happiness."

Kitty Cat Days

So, I decided to get a cat last month and you know me, whenever I do something I do it big, which actually meant I got 2 cats. :D

What happened was that I committed to Yuki, my british blue shorthair, but then fell in love with Shiro, my exotic shorthair. And after begging my fiancé to allow me to have two cats instead of one (which took several days and a lot of dedication on my end), we ended up bringing both kitties home! About 2 weeks apart from each other, so Shiro got to settle in first.

Shiro warmed up really well. We were besties practically after the first week.

Yuki has been a bit more of a challenge. However she is slowly adjusting~
