Cameo ~Echoes~

Maya held her hands over cyndaquil’s back and he happily obliged with fresh flames. Soon the chill melted from her stiff bones. Whatever did those poor souls with water pokemon do? Her crouching position was awkward but she didn‘t want to sit on the damp ground. She glanced at her boots; they were in surprisingly good shape after the hike. Mt. Silver not having many visitors contributed to its pristine environment. Maya resumed using a wall as support. Already, the warmth had begun to leach from her hands. Many trainers had some sort of fetish with fingerless gloves. Even if those were in fashion (it seemed like they were a staple of wardrobes everywhere), Maya would be satisfied with a normal pair.

Cyndaquil poked at her feet. Maya picked him up without a second thought. She hoped she wasn’t taking advantage of his ability to double as a hot-water bottle. Everyone thought she had miraculous skill when it came to understanding pokemon; however, she hadn’t always shared such a close connection with her team. Training in Snowpoint had simply made good relationships even better. Maya wondered whether to share this information with Terra. The girl certainly needed help with her chikorita. Unfortunately, bonding in blizzards wasn’t the best idea for grass types. A stroll in Amity Square would work better.

When will he come back?

She closed her eyes. Well, that thought was certainly out of the blue. He had only been gone for a few minutes. No doubt Red was being stubborn and refusing to come down from the cave he had mistaken as his castle. The thing was, only a charmer like Blue could make him yield. Something about him just put everyone at ease. Blue was the type who had a cult following that mailed him bizarre items. Maya, on the other hand, vastly preferred pokemon to people. Being seen as an idol didn’t interest her. Not that she had issues dealing with her fellow human beings; they sometimes sickened her, that was all. That was only natural. Team Rocket --Magma? Plasma? whatever they went by these days-- scribbled all too often over humanity’s good name.

Cyndaquil hissed. Maya didn’t pay attention at first as she thought the pokemon was dreaming. He often made strange noises in his sleep. Then there came the sound of footsteps. She straightened up, unnerved by the all-too-loud pounding of her heart. There was no way Team Rocket could really be here... even if they were, she wouldn’t back down. Besides, Terra always said that she wanted an authentic Rocket uniform, didn’t she? This could be a good thing.

Even so, Maya relaxed once the couple came into view. A boy who needed a haircut and a girl in barely-existent shorts froze once they saw her. These weren’t members of a shady organization. Although, she did feel as if she had seen them before. Maya noticed the girl trembling: she certainly wasn’t prepared for the adventures Mt. Silver had in store.

“Hi,” Maya said before it got too awkward. “What are you doing here?”

“Looking for N!” the boy blurted out.

“Oh my Arceus! Excuse him.” The girl jabbed her elbow into his ribs. “Black doesn’t know what he’s saying. We were, um…”

“Looking for N,” Maya repeated. “Who’s that?”

The girl flushed. “None of your business!”

“You don’t know?” Black gawked at her. “Everyone knows him back in Isshu. Anyway, he’s impossible to miss. His green hair is fluorescent. He used to do like, shampoo commercials? But now he‘s the leader of these people who are tryin’ to--”

The girl elbowed him again. “Shut up!”

“What’s your problem, White? Maybe she knows something.”

White crossed her arms. “As if. Look at her. All she knows about is fashion. I mean, that’s the new fandango jacket I’ve been talking about! I bet she’s not even a real trainer. That cyndaquil looks spoiled beyond belief.”

Cyndaquil’s flames blazed in a show of protest.

“I thought your accents were strange.” Maya tried not to laugh. “Anyway, I don’t know much about Isshu or N. But I am a real trainer. If you want, we can have a battle.”

“Fine by me!”

“Oh, c’mon.” Black groaned. “We don’t have time for this!”

White ignored him and threw a pokeball.

A flash of light revealed… a fire-pig?

Laughter echoed off the walls. At first Maya thought she had been unable to control herself; she certainly found this pokemon to be rather ridiculous. But no, her voice wasn’t manly. This laugh was definitely Blue’s.

Everyone turned to the entrance where Blue and Red stood. They were covered in snow. Blue struggled to stop laughing and only just managed. He took another look at White‘s pokemon and snorted. Even Red had a mild look of amusement on his face, as if he wanted to smile but couldn’t quite remember how.

“W-where did those two come from?” White demanded.

Black‘s eyes widened like saucers. “Holy Mewtwo, that’s Red! In the flesh!”

Red stood there while Black unleashed a torrent of admiration on him. The only sign of his discomfort was the slight tensing of his jaw. Maya and Blue exchanged a glance. Before the kids from Isshu could blink, Maya and Blue each took one of Red’s hands and began to run.

“Wait, what about N? We need new leads!” White yelled.

“Bye, Red!” Black called after them. “Bye, pretty girl in pink!”

“Fandango,” Red murmured.

Maya didn’t know how the cave-dwelling Champion knew that.

Impressive.
